If you're renting, operating, or maintaining a Tadano 130-ton crane, this checklist is for you. Especially if you're doing it without a dedicated load chart specialist on your team.

So check the machine's identification plate. Not the rental agreement, not what the operator told you, not the invoice. The ID plate. Write down three things: the model number, the serial number, and the year of manufacture. Your load chart choice and your parts catalog lookup both start with these three data points.
Step 2: Nail down the configuration before you open the chart
Tadano load charts are not one big table. They're a set of tables, each tied to a physical configuration. For the ATF 130-5, you're usually choosing between:
- Outriggers fully extended, 360° rotation
- Outriggers fully extended, over-front only
- Pick-and-carry (on rubber) with specific tire and counterweight conditions
And then each of those splits again by counterweight setup—full, reduced, or none. The column you pick has to match what's physically bolted to the crane.
You'd be surprised how often this goes wrong. Reading an over-front column when the job requires 360° work inflates the allowed capacity by 20–30% in some boom ranges.
(Note to self: the decal on the counterweight isn't always trustworthy either. Verify the actual ballast before assuming.)
Step 3: Read the capacity as gross, then subtract everything
Standard crane math, but this is still where everyday mistake #1 happens.
The number at the intersection of boom length and radius is gross capacity. It includes the hook block, the slings, the main boom head, any auxiliary gear, and the load itself. Deduct all of it before comparing against the actual load weight.
Simple.
People skip the subtraction anyway. A 20-ton cell minus a 1.5-ton hook block and 0.4-ton rigging leaves 18.1 tons, not 20. Obvious on paper. In the field, I've watched planned lifts lose their entire safety margin because nobody did the math.
If the job uses a jib, add the jib stow-off weight and offset angle effects. The manual covers this in a dedicated section. Read it before you calculate, not after.
Step 4: Read the footnotes (this is the step everyone skips)
The footnotes under the load chart block are not boilerplate. For the ATF 130-5 and GR-130EX, they include things like minimum radius at certain boom lengths, wind speed limits, restricted boom lengths with light counterweight, jib offset limits, and rotation restrictions.
In September 2022, I approved a lift plan at 9 m/s wind for a configuration whose footnote capped it at 7 m/s. The main chart looked fine—the number in the cell was well above the load. The footnote on the same page said otherwise. That gray area in the chart? It exists because of limiting conditions. Ignoring it cost us an extra rental day and a conversation with the client that I still don't enjoy remembering.
Add footnotes to your pre-lift checklist. Chart reading is not complete until every note on the page has been reviewed.
Step 5: When ordering parts, use the serial number range in the Tadano parts catalog
The Tadano parts catalog—available through the official parts portal at parts.tadano.com—organizes components by machine family, then by serial number range. The same hydraulic pump on a GR-130EX can carry a different part number before and after a serial break.
Ordering by model name only is the classic shortcut. Here's where that shortcut got me.
In 2022, I saved $800 by sourcing what looked like a compatible swing gearbox part for a GR-130EX, based on the model name alone. The spline didn't match. The fitting attempt made it worse. Result: $2,800 for an expedited order of the correct part, plus two days of field downtime. Net loss about $3,600. The "budget" option was never actually cheaper.
The right process: confirm the serial number from the ID plate (step 1), find the matching catalog revision, check the exploded diagram, then enter the part number. Screenshot the catalog page and attach it to your purchase order. Future-you will thank present-you.
Step 6: Cross-check mating points on the exploded diagram
Part numbers alone don't guarantee fit. The exploded diagram shows how the part mates with neighbors—bolt patterns, O-rings, flanges, shaft collars. If the replacement body is aluminum and the original was steel, the diagram matters even when the part number matches.
Forty-five seconds on the diagram has prevented at least six wrong purchases for us in the last two years. It's the last gate before money leaves the account.
Common mistakes that still show up
A few more cautions, learned the hard way:
- Using an outdated chart revision. As of my last check in early 2025, the current ATF 130-5 and GR-130EX charts on the Tadano official site are the authority. A photocopy from 2019 is a compliance risk—not a reference.
- Assuming Demag parts interchange after the acquisition. Tadano acquired Demag's mobile crane business in 2019. The two product lines share some service infrastructure, but identical componentry is not guaranteed. Verify each part number in the correct model's catalog.
- Not registering for the parts portal. Full exploded views and pricing require a registered business account on the Tadano parts portal. Several colleagues hit that wall and defaulted to third-party lookups, which are not always accurate. Register once. Use the official source.
And if you're in the U.S., OSHA's crane standard (29 CFR 1926 Subpart CC) requires load charts to be available to the operator at the control station. An outdated chart or wrong configuration reading isn't just a budget risk—it's an inspectable violation. Keep the current chart in the cab and log the revision date.
Final note
The fundamentals haven't changed in decades: right chart, right configuration, subtract everything, respect the footnotes. What has changed is the execution—parts portals, serial-number lookups, digital chart revisions. The old habit of scribbling a capacity on a sticky note and calling it a plan needs to go.
