What Is a Boom Lift? And Why I Won’t Treat It Like a Tadano All Terrain Crane

Here's my opinion, and I'll state it straight: the most dangerous phrase in lifting equipment is "basically." "A boom lift is basically a crane." "A Tadano all terrain crane is basically a bigger boom lift." No. It isn't. A boom lift is an access platform for people. A crane is a lifting machine for loads. The moment you blur that boundary, you're not planning a lift—you're gambling.

I'm not saying this from an office chair. I've been specifying lifting equipment for 11 years. I've personally made, and documented, 12 significant mistakes—total wasted budget somewhere north of $170,000. More often than not, the expensive mistake wasn't a mechanical failure. It was a planning failure caused by people mixing up machines.

What Is a Boom Lift?

Let's answer the search question directly: a boom lift is an aerial work platform. It can be self-propelled, trailer-mounted, or truck-mounted. It uses a telescopic or articulating hydraulic boom to put workers, tools, and light materials into hard-to-reach positions. That's its job. It is not designed to handle heavy suspended loads like a crane.

Actually, no—let me be more specific. A boom lift is designed to carry the people and tools needed to do a task at height. It is not a general-purpose lifting machine. The platform capacity is limited, usually somewhere in the 500 to 1,000 lb range depending on the model. And that number changes as the boom extends, rotates, or goes off-level. That's why a boom lift has its own type of load chart too.

The main types are:

  • Telescopic boom lifts: straight boom, long horizontal reach.
  • Articulating boom lifts: knuckle boom that reaches over obstacles.
  • Rough-terrain boom lifts: heavy-duty tires and better travel on uneven ground.

But they all answer the same question: how do I get my people and tools to the work position? They don't answer: how do I lift a 4-ton steel beam? That's a crane question.

The Mistake That Made Me Read Every Chart

In 2018, I was running a mezzanine installation. We had a bundle of steel decking that weighed about 1,200 lb and needed to go up 18 ft. A supervisor said, "Use the boom lift—it has a boom." I authorized it. The boom lift arrived with a platform rating of only 600 lb. We checked the chart after the material was already on site, not before.

The rental operator looked at the chart, looked at the load, and said no. He was right. That was the day we dodged a bullet. But the day was lost, the redelivery cost us $740, and the schedule started slipping. The mistake wasn't the equipment. The mistake was that nobody had stated the boundary out loud.

From that point on, I became the person on every site who says the annoying thing: show me the chart.

What the Tadano 200 Ton Crane Load Chart Actually Tells You

The first time I had to verify a Tadano 200 ton crane load chart, I realized how much of my earlier career was guesswork. A load chart isn't a marketing document. It's an engineering boundary. It tells you what the crane can lift at a given radius, with a given boom length, in a given configuration. It also includes the footnotes that most people ignore: outrigger settings, jib deductions, hook block weight, wind limits, and parts of line.

I once rented a 200-ton all terrain for an industrial job because the main chart numbers looked solid. The first lift was at a long radius with a load that seemed reasonable. The chart didn't agree. We stopped the lift, re-rigged, and called in a bigger unit. The extra rental was $4,800. The alternative was a lot worse.

So when someone asks me, "Can the 200-ton do this?" I don't say "probably." I ask them to pull up the specific chart for that crane, that configuration, and that radius. If the line isn't there, the lift isn't there.

Why All Terrain Doesn't Mean All-Purpose

I've used Tadano all terrain cranes on projects from refinery turnarounds to concrete plant upgrades. I like them. The 2019 acquisition of Demag's mobile crane business added a lot of depth to the lineup. And the parts portal and dealer network make a real difference on multi-week jobs.

But "all terrain" refers to mobility. A Tadano all terrain crane can travel on the highway and then move around a job site that would swallow a highway truck crane. That's a huge advantage. What it doesn't mean is that one crane can replace every other lifting tool on site.

A 200-ton all terrain is a specialist. A 20-ton rough terrain is a specialist. A boom lift is a specialist. The professional part is knowing which specialist belongs on which task. I'd rather work with a specialist who knows its limits than a generalist who overpromises. That's true for equipment, and it's true for people.

The Objection I Still Hear

I get why people say, "But a boom lift has a boom. Why can't it lift like a small crane?" It's a fair question. At first glance, a telescopic boom is a telescopic boom. But the design criteria are different. A boom lift is built around stability for people in a basket. A crane is built around load moment, winch capacity, and a suspended load. The operator training, the inspection requirements, and the safety factors are all different.

By the way, don't confuse a boom lift with a boom truck, either. A boom truck is a truck-mounted crane. It's built to lift loads. A boom lift is an aerial work platform. One is for lifting heavy things; the other is for lifting people and their tools. I've made that confusion expensive too.

Load Charts Don't Care About Accessories

This might seem like an odd detour, but I've had the conversation more than once. If your search history includes 'lmc truck' because you're upgrading a work truck, here's something worth remembering: bolt-on truck parts don't change the rated capacity of the lifting equipment. A custom bumper doesn't add counterweight. Bigger tires don't improve the crane's chart. And truck nuts definitely don't make a lift safer.

On a real job, the load chart is the only accessory that matters. If it isn't in the manufacturer's documentation, it isn't real.

What I Put in Our Pre-Lift Checklist Now

Before any rented or purchased lifting equipment goes to work, I ask the crew five questions:

  1. What does the load chart allow at the exact radius and height we need?
  2. Is this machine designed for access or for lifting loads?
  3. Which configuration deductions apply—jib, hook block, rigging, outrigger position?
  4. Who is the named operator qualified for this specific equipment class?
  5. What is the documented wind limit for this lift?

If anyone answers "I don't know," the lift doesn't happen. That isn't over-caution. It's professionalism.

Bottom Line

I'll say it one more time so it's clear: a boom lift is not a crane. A Tadano all terrain crane is not a boom lift. And a professional who respects that boundary is worth more than any piece of iron.

Next time somebody says, "it's basically the same thing," ask to see the load chart. Then ask to see the operator's record. If they hand you the same piece of paper for both machines, walk away.
