The Day I Ordered the Wrong Tadano Spare Parts (And Spent $4,000 to Learn the Difference)

It was a Tuesday in March 2022, and I was fresh into my role as equipment supervisor for a small industrial construction outfit. We ran a mixed fleet – three mobile cranes, including a 2018 Tadano ATF 120G-5 all terrain crane that had never given us a single issue. Until that morning.

The operator called me over, pointing at a slow hydraulic leak near the boom pivot. 'It's been weeping since last week,' he said. 'Probably the main lift cylinder gland seal.' He was an old hand, trusted my judgment rarely. I checked the service manual, verified the part number, and started ordering.

The technician who helped me walked me through the serial number lookup, and I saw how many subtle variations exist across the ATF range. He wasn't condescending. He just said, 'This is why we insist on serial numbers, even for what looks like the same machine.'

I'm not a fan of blind OEM loyalty. I've used aftermarket filters and grease with no issues. But when it comes to something that holds 5,000 PSI of hydraulic pressure six meters above a worker's head – I'm done gambling. The old mindset that 'local is always faster' or 'cheaper is smarter' is outdated. And I got a refresher on something they teach in every crane safety course: never guess on critical components.
