Tadano Crawler Crane, Tadano 50 Ton Mobile Crane, or Gantry Crane? A Rental Planner’s Honest Checklist

There is no universal best crane. If someone tells you to always rent a Tadano crawler crane, or always buy a Tadano 50 ton mobile crane, they probably haven't paid for a wrong decision themselves.

I've spent the last seven years booking and inspecting lifting equipment for industrial construction. I have made, and documented, 12 significant equipment-selection mistakes—about $18,000 in wasted budget. The checklist below is my attempt to make those mistakes useful. It won't win you a prize at the annual safety meeting, but it might keep you from relocating a 50-ton headache.

Before the Branch: Ask Three Questions

Every lifting job is a branch point. The right machine depends on three things: how far the load has to travel, how many times the lift repeats, and what the ground under the crane looks like. There is no universal answer. There is only the answer for your scenario.

(If you found this article by searching "crane vs heron," you were probably hoping for a bird. The machine crane does not fly away. I'll get to that misunderstanding in a moment.)

Scenario A: The Load Is Moving Between Sites

If your work is scattered across different buildings, laydown yards, or towns, a Tadano 50 ton mobile crane is usually the most practical option. It can road to the next site, set up on outriggers, and be lifting in less than an hour. The same is not true for a crawler crane, which usually needs transport trailers, and not true for a gantry crane, which is fixed in place.

In March 2022, I booked a Tadano crawler crane for two short lifts on two separate sites because the day rate was lower than the mobile crane. I didn't count the cost of lowboy transport, assembly, and the third day we needed because the second lift was 40 miles away. That decision added about $2,300 to the job and a full day of schedule risk. A Tadano 50 ton mobile crane would have driven between the sites and done the job in two shorter days.

Lesson: If the work moves, the crane should move too. Flexibility has a value, even though it doesn't appear as a separate line item.

Scenario B: Soft Ground and Heavy Repetitive Picks

If the site ground is soft, unprepared, or just not the clean slab you promised in the pre-bid meeting, a Tadano crawler crane deserves serious consideration. Crawler tracks spread the load over a much larger area than outrigger floats, and the machine can travel with the load on level ground within the manufacturer's limits. That matters when you're lifting structural steel out of a truck at five different pick points, right after a rainstorm.

The conventional wisdom is that mobile cranes are always easier to mobilize. My experience suggests otherwise. In September 2021, we chose a 50-ton mobile crane over a crawler because the quote was $350 per day lower. Then we spent $1,100 on crane mats and two days of grading because the outrigger pads were sinking into wet fill. The lift itself took one day. The preparation took three. The Tadano crawler crane we passed on could have tracked onto the site and started lifting the same morning—with a competent ground assessment, of course.

Note to self: day rate is not total cost. Ground conditions determine which machine is actually cheaper.

Scenario C: Many Lifts, Same Spot, Same Load Path

Here is the scenario most people overlook: repetitive lifts in a workshop, loading dock, or maintenance bay. If you're doing 20 or more identical lifts from a truck to a work table, a gantry crane is often better than any mobile crane. The counterintuitive part is that a gantry crane looks less like a real crane. From the outside, it's just a steel beam on legs. The reality is that a fixed lifting point gives you something mobile cranes cannot: a predictable load path and zero daily setup time.

In 2023, we paid a crane rental company for a full day to unload steel beams in a small fabrication shop. The crane finished in three hours. We still paid for the full day. A portable gantry crane, rented or purchased, would have stayed in place and been ready every time a truck showed up. It took a few more hours of planning, but it eliminated the waiting game.

If you've ever assembled a gantry crane with a dewalt drill and a socket adapter, you know that setup time is not zero. But once it's up, it's up. That certainty is worth real money when your crew is standing around with their hands in their pockets.

The 'Crane vs Heron' Confusion

If you searched crane vs heron, I don't want to ignore the keyword. The heron is a bird. The crane is a machine. A heron cannot lift 50 tons, and a Tadano crawler crane cannot nest in a tree. If you are shopping for a lifting solution, you need the machine. If you are birdwatching, you probably don't need a load chart.

How to Determine Your Scenario (and Avoid My Mistakes)

Here is the practical check I run before calling a dealer:

  • How many lifts, and how far apart? Ten or fewer lifts spread across a site or multiple sites: a Tadano 50 ton mobile crane is probably the right tool. More than 20 repetitive lifts from the same position: look seriously at a gantry crane. The hourly rates make sense until the machine is sitting idle.
  • What is the ground actually like? Soft, rutted, wet, or undocumented fill: compare a Tadano crawler crane against a mobile crane with engineered crane mats. A crawler is not magic—it still needs a qualified person to assess ground bearing—but it can reduce the amount of temporary support you need.
  • What is a one-day delay worth? Calculate the real cost of missing your deadline: idle crew, permit extensions, penalties, lost credibility. Then ask the supplier to commit to a specific arrival and setup time. Paying extra for guaranteed delivery is not a waste. In March 2024, we paid $1,750 extra for a guaranteed 7:00 AM arrival of a mobile crane. Avoiding a one-day delay saved us about $9,000 in labor and permit costs.

Before work starts, check the standard that applies to your equipment. ASME B30.5 is the common reference for mobile and crawler cranes. ASME B30.2 covers overhead and gantry cranes. In the U.S., OSHA 29 CFR 1926.1400 also requires a qualified person to verify ground conditions and safe assembly. Keep that requirement, write it into the rental contract, and do not rely on a verbal "it'll be fine."

Bottom Line

It took me seven years and roughly $18,000 in avoidable mistakes to understand this: the best crane is the one that matches the scenario, not the one with the most impressive brochure. Mobility, ground, repetition, and deadline certainty are the four variables. When the deadline is fixed, certainty is the premium you're actually buying. A slightly more expensive crane that shows up on time is cheaper than a "probably on time" quote that doesn't.

Use this checklist. Ask better questions. And if a heron lands on your job site, log it as a wildlife sighting, not a lifting solution.
