When I look at Tadano crane specs, I'm not looking for the model with the biggest number on the brochure. I'm looking for the one that makes money on the jobs we actually run.

That's why I've learned to ask what's NOT included before I ask what the price is. The vendor who lists all fees upfront—even when the total looks higher—usually ends up costing less. That is not a marketing slogan. It's a procurement rule.
Dimension 1: On-Site Mobility
A Tadano rough terrain crane is built for the kind of ground that ruins a pickup truck: mud, packed gravel, soft fill, slopes. It has four-wheel drive, four-wheel steering, crab mode, and flotation tires. It's slow on pavement, but it will get into places an all-terrain crane cannot reach without mats.
An all-terrain crane is also four-wheel steer, but it's heavier and has a longer wheelbase. On soft or uneven ground, the extra axle loads can turn a job site into a tire-swallowing problem. The RT's wider tires and lower tire pressure make it the better choice for rough terrain—surprise, right?
I once quoted a job at a slate quarry where the crew needed to move a hydraulic breaker attachment—they called it a skull crusher—off a slate truck and onto a steel rack. The site had a 12-foot gate, soft pits, and no flat pavement. An all-terrain could have driven in, but I calculated that we'd need $600 in wooden mats just to stop it from sinking. Dimension 2: Roadability and Transport

When an all-terrain crane travels on public roads, you're paying for a licensed operator, fuel, insurance, permits, and sometimes an escort. If the crane has to be roadable, that cost is baked into every move. A rough terrain crane needs a lowboy trailer, but a lowboy move is predictable: you know the rate, the window, and the destination.
Here's a real comparison from Q2 2024. One dealer quoted us a rough terrain for $32,000 less than another dealer's all-terrain. The lower quote looked like the obvious choice. (Should mention: the quote did not include counterweight transport, which added $900 per move.) I ran the numbers assuming 18 moves a year at $700 per trailer trip. Over three years, that's $37,800 in transport—wiping out the $32,000 price advantage. If we had moved that crane four times a year instead of 18, the rough terrain would have won easily.
Conclusion: roadability is only an advantage if you actually use it. If you can leave a crane on site for weeks, an RT plus a scheduled trailer is cheaper.
Dimension 3: The Load Chart at the Radius You Actually Use
Tadano crane specs always include maximum capacity. But maximum capacity is measured at a short radius—usually around 3 meters—with the boom nearly vertical and the outriggers fully spread. That number is for marketing. The number that matters is capacity at the radius and boom length you'll use on the job.
I've made this mistake myself. We nearly ordered a 70-ton all-terrain because the dealer said we'd have plenty of margin. When I looked at the load chart, a 55-ton Tadano rough terrain could handle the same pick with more margin at the same radius—and it was $40,000 cheaper to own. The 70-ton had a higher max capacity, but it didn't put that capacity where we needed it.
So when you compare specs, don't just compare the headline tonnage. Compare the numbers at 5 meters, 10 meters, 20 meters, and at full extension. Ask for the chart in PDF, not a screenshot on a phone. If a supplier won't give you the load chart with the quote, find another supplier.
I want to say the GR-550XL has a 43-meter boom, but don't quote me on that. What I remember clearly is that its load chart beat the larger all-terrain on the specific pick we were pricing. Verify the current spec sheet on Tadano's official site before you put it in an RFP.
Dimension 4: Maintenance, Tires, and Parts
I have mixed feelings about all-terrain cranes. On one hand, roadability is a genuine asset. On the other, you pay for that asset daily: every axle is an inspection point, every brake disc is a wear item, and every tire is a potential line item on a repair order. Over the past six years, our maintenance records showed that the all-terrain cranes in our fleet generated about two and a half times more service hours related to the carrier than the rough terrain units did. The lift mechanism was fine on both; the difference was in axles, steering, and suspension.
That's not to say a rough terrain crane is cheap to maintain. The tires are enormous, and they're not cheap. But there are fewer of them. And the powertrain is simpler because it doesn't need to cruise at 80 km/h for hours.
If I remember correctly, the annual tire budget for our 55-ton rough terrain was about $7,000. I might be misremembering—prices vary by region—but the pattern is clear: fewer road miles, fewer road-related repairs.
What I'd Buy (and What I'd Rent)
Everything I'd read about all-terrain cranes said they're the obvious choice for a regional contractor. In practice, the RT won on cost per lift for stationary jobs. If most of your jobs are within 15 miles of your yard and you can leave a crane on site for a week or more, buy or lease a Tadano rough terrain crane. It's simpler, predictable, and usually cheaper.
If you're crossing state lines every week and the crane needs to drive itself between sites, an all-terrain crane makes sense. Just don't buy one without checking the TCO first. The roadability is worth real money, but only if you use it.
If you're new to cranes, rent both before you buy. Ask the rental company for a spec sheet with all weights, dimensions, and load charts. Ask them for the pricing in line items: delivery, setup, counterweight, operator, fuel, insurance. The more fees they list upfront, the more likely you are to get a trustworthy total.
A Note on Operators (and a Common Search)
One final cost item that people forget: the person running the machine. I get asked a lot about how to operate a mini excavator—usually by someone who thinks it's a stepping stone to cranes. It is not. A mini excavator is a digger. A crane is a lifting machine. The controls are different, the load dynamics are different, and rigging is a separate skill set. Budget for certified operator training before you budget for a new crane. An untrained operator can damage an outrigger in the first ten minutes and turn a good investment into a very expensive lesson.
Bottom Line
When you're comparing Tadano crane specs, you're not just comparing metal and hydraulics. You're comparing operating costs, transportation fees, maintenance schedules, and operator skill. The cheapest crane to buy is not always the cheapest crane to run.
And if a dealer gives you a one-line price without a load chart or a list of exclusions, remember what I said: ask what's NOT included. Per FTC advertising guidelines (ftc.gov), claims have to be truthful and substantiated. In the crane world, the load chart is that substantiation. If you can't get one, that's a red flag.
