Tadano Crane Specs or a Gantry Crane? A Cost Controller's Guide to Choosing the Right Lifting Setup

If you're trying to settle a debate between a Tadano all-terrain crane and a gantry crane, you already know there's no universal right answer. The right machine depends on your site, your loads, your schedule, and your ground conditions. Anyone who gives you a single answer without asking those questions is guessing.

I've spent the last six years as the person who signs off on lifting equipment purchases for a mid-sized industrial contractor. I've signed off on more than $1.2 million in lifting-related spend, and I've made mistakes that cost time and money. The honest version is this: I've bought the wrong type of crane before. Not the wrong brand—the wrong category. So let me save you that lesson.

Before 2019, a Demag AC model was a high-performance machine with a specialized parts situation. After the acquisition, that same crane gained access to Tadano's global service network and parts portal. That is a huge deal for buyers who don't want to wait eight weeks for a hydraulic hose. It also means the spec sheet on an older Demag crane is no longer just "Demag specs"—it's part of a broader Tadano range that goes from roughly 20 metric tons to over 600 metric tons. If you're building a fleet, that single source of parts and training is worth more than any brochure.

How to read Tadano crane specs without fooling yourself

Tadano crane specs on paper will usually lead with maximum capacity. That's the number that gets quoted at safety meetings, but it's almost always the most misleading number on the page.

What you need:

  • Capacity at your working radius: A 100-ton crane might lift 100 tons at 3 meters, but 18 tons at 20 meters. That's the number that matters.
  • Boom length and jib: Can the crane reach the load point without assembly costs?
  • Counterweight: More counterweight means more trucks on site. That adds to the cost per lift.
  • Axle weights: A machine that needs permits every time it moves will burn your budget in escort vehicles.

I want to say I've never been tricked by a max-capacity number. Actually, no—I have. I put a 100-ton Tadano on a project once because the load was 45 tons and the math looked safe. Then the working radius turned out to be 16 meters, and the load chart said we needed a much bigger rig. That mistake cost us two days and a second crane rental. The load chart is the contract. The brochure is just a handshake.

Scenario 1: You move from job site to job site

If most of your lifts happen at different locations—highway bridges, water treatment plants, scattered tower sites—a Tadano all-terrain or rough-terrain crane is probably your answer. It drives from site to site within legal limits, sets up, lifts, folds up, and moves on. You're paying for mobility, not just capacity.

The math makes sense even with the higher hourly rate compared to a stationary crane. Transport costs drop because the crane drives itself. Setup is faster than a crawler crane. And if you rent from a dealer with a wide Tadano inventory, the same operator and service team can jump from a 60-ton machine to a 300-ton machine without changing the relationship.

Scenario 2: The lift doesn't move—and that's okay

Now the gantry crane case. If you're picking up the same load in the same yard every day, a gantry crane can be the low-cost answer. The upfront price is often lower than an all-terrain of comparable capacity because you don't pay for axles, engines, emissions systems, or roadability.

I'll give you an example from our yard. We fabricated steel components and needed to handle repeated picks in a storage bay. A gantry crane on rails did the job, and it did it indoors. When we had to prime components before shipping, we hung a tarp and used a paint roller for touch-ups. That kind of maintenance is cheap, and it's part of why a stationary gantry can have a lower total cost of ownership.

But the catch is site prep. A gantry crane sits on rails or a runway beam, and that means foundations, rail alignment, and usually an engineered structural frame. If your "cheap" gantry comes with a $60,000 site prep bill, it's not cheap. I watched one gantry project sink an inch after a wet winter because someone skipped the soil compaction. The redo—and the safety pause—ate the entire savings.

Scenario 3: Heavy loads or soft ground

What if you're lifting a 200-ton vessel on ground that's more mud than gravel? A crawler crane is designed for that. Tadano makes crawler cranes too, and the range includes lattice boom crawlers plus all-terrains from the Demag heritage. A crawler spreads the load over tracks, so it can operate on surfaces that would make a rough-terrain crane sink. It also carries its own counterweight, eliminating some trailer loads.

The downside is obvious: a crawler crane doesn't drive down the highway at 50 mph. If your work is scattered across a 200-mile region, the mobilization cost of a crawler can wipe out its capacity advantage. That's why crawler cranes are often rented for specific projects, not bought and parked.

The counterintuitive pick: don't "buy flexibility"

Here's the part that sounds backwards but has saved me money: the mobile crane with a higher purchase price can beat the gantry crane on total cost if there's any chance you'll move the operation.

A used gantry crane has a thin resale market. It's built to stay in one place, and moving it costs a fortune. A Tadano all-terrain, especially the popular 100-to-220-ton class, has dealers and renters looking for exactly that machine. If your business expands, you can sell the mobile crane or send it to another site. A gantry crane is a building, not a tool.

I still kick myself for buying a fixed overhead/gantry-style unit in 2023 because it was 30% cheaper. Two years later, we moved to a bigger yard, and the relocation quote was 30% of the purchase price. I learned that lesson in dollars, not spreadsheets. Ask yourself: what's the probability you'll still be in this exact spot in five years? If it's less than 80%, the mobile crane deserves a serious look.

Which one should you pick? Answer these five questions

  1. How many distinct work sites do you visit per month? If the answer is more than three, start with mobile cranes.
  2. Is this a permanent operation or a project with an end date? Permanent or long-term means gantry; temporary means mobile or rental.
  3. What is your heaviest pick, and at what radius? Compare against a load chart, not the max lift number.
  4. What is the ground like? Soft or unimproved ground means crawler or all-terrain with mats; solid concrete or steel yard means gantry.
  5. How hard is it to get an operator? If operators in your area are trained on mobile cranes, that lowers the real cost of a Tadano all-terrain.

No single question is decisive. The one I always tell managers to underline is the fifth one. People, not machine specs, create the biggest cost difference.

A quick word about claims and field checks

When a dealer or rental company tells you, "This Tadano is in perfect shape," ask for service history. Ads have to be truthful and substantiated under FTC guidelines—I know that's about marketing, but it applies to the crane world too. If a spec claim seems too clean, put it to the test. I check the hour meter, the maintenance log, and the load test certificate before I sign. The paint roller test is optional, but watching how a machine's paint fades can tell you how it was stored.

Bottom line

Tadano crane specs, a Demag AC with post-2019 support, a gantry crane for a permanent yard, a crawler for soft ground—they all have a place. The trick is to begin with the actual problem, not the machine. Build a cost model that includes transport, site prep, operator labor, downtime, and resale value. Then decide if you need a mobile crane or a gantry crane—or maybe a rental for one project.

There's no fifth-grade trivia answer that fits every lifting job. The answer that fits your site is the only one that matters.
