Chevy Truck, Tractor Data, and the Comparison Problem

If you're comfortable with pickup specifications, think of it this way. A Chevy truck 2500 can tow more than a 1500. But if you're moving tools around town, the smaller truck is cheaper to buy, easier to park, and still does the job. The same logic applies to Tadano cranes.

Crane selection is also like reading tractor data. On a tractor data sheet, you don't buy based on the model name. You look at PTO horsepower, hydraulic flow, and lift capacity at the hitch. With a crane, the load chart is your tractor data. It tells you what the machine can do under the conditions that matter.

A load chart is that substantiation for a crane capacity claim. If a vendor can't produce the load chart with the quote, you're buying a claim, not a spec.

Compare that to USPS. According to USPS pricing effective January 2025, a First-Class Mail letter is $0.73. That's a published rate. I'm not saying a crane rental should have a postal rate card. I'm saying a quote that hides the real costs until later is not a real quote.

When a 200-Ton Tadano Is the Wrong Choice

To be fair, there are jobs where a 200-ton Tadano is the only practical option. If you're setting a heavy vessel at a 100-foot radius, no 50-ton chart will help. But bigger is not better in every context.

A 200-ton all-terrain crane needs more counterweight, more permits, and more space to set up. If the site has narrow access roads, the 200-ton machine might not even get in. If the ground is soft, the larger outrigger loads can be a problem. A lighter crane with a properly prepared pad can be safer and cheaper.

There's also a lower boundary. If you're doing repetitive indoor lifts under 3 tons, you probably shouldn't be renting a truck crane at all. A boom lift or a compact crawler crane will be easier to schedule and cheaper to run. The best machine is the one that fits the task, not the one with the biggest nameplate.

If a vendor says “trust me, it'll lift it,” ask for the load chart. If they can't produce one, that's your answer.
