What This Checklist Is For
I work as quality compliance manager at a crane parts distributor. Every week I review somewhere in the neighborhood of 200 unique inbound Tadano crane parts before they get shipped to customers. I have been doing this for four years, and before that I spent time in mobile crane maintenance. This article is the checklist I actually use when a Tadano 50 ton crane part lands on my bench.
It is for maintenance leads, fleet managers, and rental companies. Use it when the box arrives, not after the crane is already scheduled for service. It takes about 20 minutes per part, and it catches most problems that cause return shipments, rework, and unsafe installations. The goal is efficiency: verify parts at the receiving bench instead of dealing with them after installation.
The 7-Point Tadano 50 Ton Crane Parts Checklist
1. Confirm the Part Number on the Component, Not the Box
The part number on the box is a starting point, not proof. Open the packaging and compare the number stamped or laser-etched on the actual component to the Tadano parts manual page for your model and serial number. If the supplier printed a label from an email, that does not count.
Check the revision suffix. A hydraulic pump, swing motor, or control valve might look identical but carry a -1, -2, or A suffix. Sometimes the revision is interchangeable, and sometimes it changes the thread type, connector pinout, or hose routing. I am not 100% sure why suppliers still send mismatched revisions, but my best guess is that someone orders by description instead of part code. It is a fairly common error.
2. Measure the Physical Dimensions
Most buyers focus on whether the part has the right name or fits the same model number. They completely miss the pin diameter, bolt circle, or shaft length. On a Tadano 50 ton crane, the boom pivot pin is not automatically the same as a pin on a smaller model, even if the heads look similar from a distance.
Use calipers for pins and shafts. Use a thread gauge for fittings. Last quarter I rejected a batch of hydraulic fittings because the thread pitch was 1.0 instead of 1.5. They looked identical from two feet away. The vendor did not argue after I showed them the gauge.
If you are replacing a worn part, compare the new part to the old one before measuring documentation. The old part is a physical reference, assuming nobody replaced it with the wrong part before you.
3. Inspect Threads and Fastener Grades
This is where the breaker bar warning goes. A breaker bar is a tool for breaking fasteners loose. It is not a torque tool. I have no idea why it keeps appearing in crane repair kits, but it does.
On crane connections, torque matters because clamp load matters. A bolt with the correct thread fit but the wrong grade can fail under load. Check the head marking: 8.8, 10.9, or 12.9 depending on the application. If the grade is not specified by the Tadano manual, verify it before you install. If you do not have a recently calibrated torque wrench, get one. A tactile approach to tightness is not a measurement.
4. Check the AC Compressor and Belt Drive Components
Most technicians ignore the AC compressor until the cab gets hot, and then they replace it. That is backwards on many mobile cranes. On a Tadano 50 ton crane, the cab AC compressor can share a belt with an alternator or a hydraulic pump depending on engine configuration. A seized compressor clutch can take that belt out, which turns a comfort problem into a power problem.
I have mixed feelings about aftermarket AC compressors. On one hand, some are remanufactured to OE specs and perform just fine. On the other, cheap units often show up with the wrong clutch gap, and that burns out the clutch within a week. Check the clutch gap with a feeler gauge before installation and check the belt for glazing, wear, or an incorrect part number.
Also confirm whether the compressor is included in the preventive maintenance schedule for your model. If it is not, it should be. This is one of those parts people only think about when they are already down.
5. Verify the Load Chart and LMI Configuration
On a Tadano 50 ton crane with an electronic load moment indicator, the chart in the display has to match the actual machine configuration. Boom length, jib, counterweight, and sometimes tire pressure all affect the chart. If the LMI says the chart is locked or mismatched, do not try to bypass it.
I occasionally see search traffic from operators asking how to unlock the load chart or loader function. For the crane, unlocking the chart means entering the current configuration, confirming the chart number, and running the self-test. According to OSHA's Cranes and Derricks in Construction standard (29 CFR 1926.1417), a crane with an inoperative safety device must not be used. The load indicator is a safety device. This is not a suggestion from a parts distributor. It is a compliance requirement. ASME B30.5, the mobile crane standard, also treats inspection and maintenance as part of the safety picture.
6. Dry-Fit Before Final Assembly
Dry-fit the part before you torque anything to final spec. For a hydraulic cylinder, connect the hoses and cycle it at low pressure. For a pivot pin, slide it through the lug bores by hand. If it needs a hammer, something is off even if the part number says it is correct.
So glad I caught a misaligned boom wear pad before final install. Almost bolted it down and discovered the problem on the second test cycle, which would have meant a full disassembly. It was one click away from a much longer workday.
This step feels slow, and it is easy to skip when the job is behind schedule. In my experience, a dry-fit takes less time than the paperwork for a return.
7. Document the Replacement and Keep the Evidence
Take photos of the component, the part number, the batch code, and the installed condition. Record torque values, shims, spacers, and which manual revision you used. This documentation is what makes a warranty claim or a supplier dispute manageable.
In our Q1 2024 audit, we noticed that parts with photo documentation had a much lower dispute rate. I do not have the exact percentage in front of me, but the pattern was obvious. Suppliers do not argue with clear photos. It also helps when a customer asks later why a certain repair was done.
Common Mistakes I See With Tadano Crane Parts
Using a Breaker Bar to Tighten Fasteners
I mentioned this in step three, but it keeps showing up. A breaker bar can easily over-torque a bolt and put an invisible crack in the joint. The bolt may hold for a week and then fail at the worst possible moment. Tighten to the Tadano spec with a torque wrench, not with a long handle and feel.
Ignoring Shelf Life on Rubber Hoses and Seals
A hose or seal that has been sitting in a warehouse for five years can look new and still be past its useful life. The rubber hardens, the crimp ages, and the first pressure cycle finds the weak spot. Check the date code on hoses, belts, and seals before you install them.
Ordering the Cheapest Part Without Asking Why
To be fair, some aftermarket Tadano crane parts are perfectly good. But if a price is half the dealer's price, ask which components are made to the OEM drawing and which ones are compatible but not identical. Compatible is not the same as identical.
