Tadano 35 Ton Crane vs. Tadano Rough Terrain Crane: A Cost-First Comparison

I'm a procurement manager for a 60-person industrial construction company. I've managed our equipment budget (about $400,000 a year) for six years, negotiated with 20+ vendors, and tracked every crane invoice in our cost system. This is not a sales pitch. This is the comparison I wish someone had walked me through before we bought our first Tadano 35 ton crane.

The short version: both Tadano cranes can lift 35 tons. The useful version: one is built for people who move, the other is built for people who stay. Let me show you how I think about that difference, because the spec sheet won't tell you what either machine will actually cost you.

Full disclosure: I don't have hard data on every Tadano model in every market. What I have is our own purchase records, five years of maintenance logs, and enough rental invoices to make me cautious about simple advice.

What I Compare First: Cost Per Completed Lift

When someone asks "which is better?" I usually answer with another question: "better for what?" Because the right comparison isn't just all-terrain versus rough terrain. It's cost per completed lift.

Most buyers focus on maximum capacity and purchase price. The question they should ask is: what does the load chart look like at the radius I actually work?

It's tempting to think 35 tons is 35 tons. But the max capacity number is usually measured at a very short radius with specific boom, counterweight, and outrigger settings. Move the load to 30 feet, and the rated capacity can drop sharply. The sticker on the boom is not the machine you're buying.

1. Mobility: The All-Terrain Advantage (And the Tax It Comes With)

An all-terrain crane is road legal. It can drive from site to site without a trailer. A rough terrain crane can't. If you work across three sites in a month, the all-terrain saves you lowboy rentals, permits, and staging time. Why does this matter? Because transport is often 10-20 percent of the total cost of a lifting job.

But there's a catch. All-terrain cranes cost more to buy, they're heavier, and they need larger road access. If you're working on one site for six months, you're paying for road gear you'll never use. The rough terrain is like a truck tent: excellent once it's parked, but you still need another vehicle to get it there.

2. Jobsite Fit: Where the Rough Terrain Earns Its Keep

Rough terrain cranes have short wheelbases, four steering modes, and high-flotation tires. They're made for the inside of a refinery, a muddy plot, or a crowded city block. The all-terrain is more of a highway machine that can also work in the yard.

Here's the thing: I never expected the rough terrain to become our most-used yard crane. We bought it for a long-term site job, and it ended up doing everything from placing concrete buckets to unloading steel bundles in spaces the all-terrain couldn't reach.

Most buyers focus on max capacity and miss this. A 35-ton crane is useless if you can't position it where the load is. For us, the compact footprint was worth more than the extra road speed we didn't need.

3. Load Chart Reality: The Spec I Ignored and Regretted

I still kick myself for choosing our first Tadano 35 ton crane without studying the load chart at the radius we actually use. If I had, we would have bought a different configuration.

We regularly lift at 25 to 40 feet. At those radii, the capacity difference between the two candidates mattered more than the brochure's 35-ton headline. That's not a knock on either machine; it's a warning against relying on the most impressive number.

The surprise wasn't that capacity dropped. It's how much it dropped at a relatively modest radius. When you're lifting a heavy bucket or a steel frame onto a roof, you need the chart, not the model name.

4. Total Cost of Ownership: Why I Still Recommend a TCO Spreadsheet

In Q3 2023, we compared quotes for a Tadano 35 ton all-terrain and a rough terrain unit. The all-terrain was about 15 percent more expensive upfront, based on our configuration. That made the rough terrain look like the obvious choice.

Then I added transport. We move between sites almost every quarter. Lowboy rental, permits, and setup time added roughly $6,200 a year to the total cost of the rough terrain for our work. The all-terrain's road-legal setup saved that amount in logistics, so the TCO gap reversed.

I'm not saying the all-terrain is always the smarter buy. If you're mostly on one site, the rough terrain will likely be cheaper to own and easier to maneuver. The point is: don't decide until you've put both numbers in the same spreadsheet.

5. Parts, Service, and the Demag Factor

Tadano acquired Demag's mobile crane business in 2019. According to Tadano's public materials, that gave them a broader all-terrain lineup and a larger global parts network. For a buyer, it means you're not tied to a one-hit-wonder model. The same dealer can support a wider range of machines.

I don't have hard data on regional parts availability for every Tadano model. What I can say anecdotally is that our dealer's restock times improved after the integration. I also learned to ask about parts availability before buying, not after. The factor that can turn a bargain into a disaster is downtime waiting for a part.

Which One Should You Buy?

Here is my honest guidance:

Buy the Tadano 35 ton all-terrain if you move between sites, need road speeds, and your access roads are solid. It will pay for its higher upfront cost in logistics savings.

Buy or rent the Tadano rough terrain crane if your work is concentrated in one place, the ground is soft, or the job is in a tight footprint. It's simpler, often cheaper to buy or rent, and better at things like placing concrete buckets in corners.

And if someone tells you the only real answer is "buy the all-terrain, because it's more capable," get a second opinion. The more capable machine is the one that matches your work.

An informed customer asks better questions and makes faster decisions. I'd rather spend twenty minutes walking through a load chart with a buyer than deal with the mismatched expectations that come from buying a spec-sheet hero.
