If you're reading this, you probably have a problem. A client just added scope, a crane broke down on site, or someone misread the job schedule. Whatever happened, you need a Tadano 100t mobile crane on site in days—not weeks.
I coordinate emergency equipment calls for an industrial construction supplier. In March 2024, a client called at 4 PM on a Friday needing a 100-ton all-terrain crane for a bridge bearing replacement that had to be done before the following Thursday's traffic detour deadline. Normal lead time for that class of crane in our region: three to four weeks. We made it happen in six days. Here's how.

Step 1: Lock Down the Actual Load Specs
Before you call anyone, you need numbers. Not 'about 80 tons.' The actual lift weight, radius, and pick-and-place coordinates.
Here's what I need from the site team:
- Max lift weight (including rigging, hooks, and attachments)
- Max radius required
- Boom length needed to clear obstacles
- Outrigger pad loads and ground bearing pressure
- Pick height and placement height
The Tadano 100t line—the ATF 100-5.1, the GR-1000XL, and the rough-terrain models—each have different load charts. A 100t rating assumes ideal conditions: full counterweight, short boom, minimal radius. The real capacity at 20 meters radius with 40 meters of boom might be 18 tons. Don't let anyone sell you on the '100 ton' badge without looking at the chart.
And no, 'it's basically the same as the Liebherr LTM 1100' is not good enough. I made that assumption once. It cost us a day and a $2,400 demurrage charge.
One thing to clear up: if you searched 'Tadano cargo crane' thinking that's the same thing—it's not. Tadano's cargo crane line (the C-series) is built for shipboard container handling, not construction lifts. Different duty cycle, different mounting, different load charts. Keep that in mind before you spec the wrong machine.
Step 2: Verify Operator Certification Before the Crane
In my first two years, I made the classic rookie mistake: booking the crane and worrying about the operator later. Then you find out the only available certified operator is 300 miles away, or the operator's NCCCO certification doesn't cover the crane class you rented.
OSHA requires crane operators to be certified for the specific crane type they operate. A certified all-terrain operator can't necessarily jump into a crawler crane. When you're in a rush, this is exactly the detail that gets skipped—until an inspector shows up on site.
Ask the rental company for the operator's name and certification number when you book. Not at the gate. When you book.
Step 3: Check Site Access and Setup Space
Here's the thing: a 100t all-terrain crane is big. It needs hauling access, turning radius, and a stable pad. I've seen more than one emergency rental delayed because nobody checked the entrance gate width.
Minimum things to verify:
- Road width and weight limits for the transport trailer
- Gate clearance (the crane itself is wider than you think)
- Overhead obstructions—power lines, canopies, branches
- Ground conditions for outrigger pads
- Counterweight setup area
The GR-1000XL rough-terrain has a narrower footprint than the ATF all-terrain, which might make it the better emergency choice for tight sites. But it also has different boom and counterweight options. The wrong choice wastes hours.
Step 4: Confirm the Tadano 100t Configuration
Not all 'Tadano 100t' cranes are the same. The ATF 100-5.1 has a 50.1-meter main boom and an optional 16-meter swing-around extension, giving a max tip height around 68 meters. The rough-terrain models top out lower. If your job needs height, there's no substitute for reading the spec sheet.
Ask these four questions:
- What boom length is configured on the unit available now?
- Is the full counterweight package on the machine, or does it need to be trucked separately?
- What's the tare weight and transport configuration?
- When was the last load test and 12-month inspection?
The last one is a big deal. A crane that's been sitting in a yard for months might not have current certifications. In an emergency, 'the paperwork's in the cab' is not an answer.
Step 5: Inventory Your Auxiliary Gear While You Wait
While the crane is in transit—and there will be transit time—use the hours to audit everything else the lift depends on. Not exactly fun work, but it beats an on-site surprise.
Walk the site and confirm you have the right rigging, shackles, and slings. Check that the diesel-driven air compressor—say, a DeWalt DXCMV5076051 or similar unit if that's what your yard carries—is serviced and ready if you need pneumatic tools on site. Same for the backup generator. I used to assume the Predator 8750 in the equipment trailer was fine. One cold morning and a dead battery later, I stopped assuming.
Full auxiliary checklist:
- Air compressor: fuel, oil, hoses, fittings; no leaks at startup
- Generator: fuel, oil, battery, and load-tested under actual draw
- Rigging: slings rated for the lift weight, shackles, spreader bars
- Signaling radios: charged and tested
- Boom angle and load indicator calibration certificates
It sounds basic. The basics are what break under deadline pressure.
Not ideal to be auditing a compressor when a crane is rolling, but better than discovering a problem at 6 AM on lift day.
Step 6: Get the Rental Contract Terms Straight
Emergency rentals come with premium pricing. That's fine. What's not fine is a vague contract that leaves you open to extra charges.
Three things to confirm in writing:
- Hourly vs. daily vs. monthly rate structure—and what the overtime threshold is.
- Mobilization and demobilization fees—often flat charges, but they can balloon if you aren't specific about the site address.
- Liability, insurance, and indemnification terms—I'm not a lawyer, so this gets into territory beyond my expertise, but have your insurer review the rental agreement before you sign if time allows.
On the insurance piece: most rental outfits carry their own coverage for the equipment, but your liability for damage on site is your problem. I once paid an $800 fee to amend a rental agreement for an added insured endorsement because we forgot to request it. The crane was already en route and the site owner said no endorsement, no lift. Worth every cent though—missing the window would have triggered a $50,000 penalty in the subcontract.
Step 7: Plan the Lift Sequence in Reverse
Don't start from 'crane arrives.' Start from the deadline and work backward.
If the bearing replacement has to be done by Thursday, when does the concrete need to be re-poured? What's the cure time? When does the crane operator run out of hours per DOT regulations? How much buffer is left for weather or a breakdown?
Write the timeline with hours, not days. Include a four-hour weather buffer and a two-hour fudge factor for the unexpected. If the reverse math doesn't leave at least eight hours of slack, you need a different plan.
That rear-loading approach has saved me more times than I can count. In February 2024, the reverse timeline showed we needed the counterweight trailer two hours earlier than the rental yard planned to send it. We caught the conflict before the crane arrived, not after.
Common Mistakes That Will Burn You
I've been doing this for nine years, and the same errors keep coming up. Here are the three biggest:
1. Treating the rental confirmation as a spec sheet. The email says 'Tadano 100t crane.' That's a class, not a configuration. If you didn't ask for boom length, counterweight, and accessories in writing, assume you're getting the yard's default setup—which might not be yours.
2. Skipping the outrigger pad check. I knew I should verify the site's composite pads could handle the outrigger loads for the ATF 100-5.1—but thought 'what are the odds?' The odds caught up with me when the outrigger sank three inches into soft ground. Day lost. The machine's leveling system saved us from a worse outcome, but it was close.
3. Not asking about service backup. Who do you call at 6 AM when a warning light comes on? A good rental company will give you a direct number to a service truck, not a call center. Ask for that number when you book.
