Who This Checklist Is For
If you're a rental company adding a late-model Tadano 80-ton crane to your fleet, or a project manager reviewing a crane that's about to arrive on your site, this is for you. It's not a general crane inspection guide. It's a list of specific things I've learned to verify before signing off on a machine—things that don't always show up on the standard inspection form.
I'm a quality compliance manager at an industrial equipment company. I review roughly 200 pieces of heavy machinery annually before they're cleared for delivery. In Q1 2024 alone, I rejected 12% of first deliveries due to documentation gaps or spec mismatches. This checklist came out of those rejections.
There are seven steps below. Not all will apply to every situation, but skipping the wrong one can cost you a lot more than a service call.
Step 1: Verify the Load Chart Matches the Serial Number
This sounds too basic to list, but it's the most common discrepancy I catch. A Tadano 80-ton crane, say a model from the GR series or an older ATF, has different load charts based on production year and regional configuration.
What I do: I match the VIN-plate serial number against the load chart booklet in the cab. Not the model number on the side. The serial number. If they don't match, the chart might be from a different configuration—even if it's the same tonnage class.
Check specifically: Load capacity at 3-meter radius, full outriggers, 360-degree rotation against the booklet. That's a common point where charts diverge between configurations. It's usually off by half a ton or so—enough to matter on a tight lift.
In 2023, I flagged a 2021 Tadano GR-800EX-2 that had a chart for a standard GR-800XL pasted in. The previous owner probably grabbed the wrong replacement booklet. We corrected it before it went to the job site.
Step 2: Check the Boom Lift Sequence Log
Most people check the engine hours and the hydraulic oil level. Fewer check the boom lift cycle count or the sequence log if the crane has telematics enabled.
Here's why: On all-terrain cranes, the boom extension system undergoes wear that doesn't show up in engine hours. A crane with 4,000 engine hours but 2,000 boom cycles has a different wear profile than one with the same hours and 6,000 cycles. High cycle counts with low engine hours often mean the machine was used primarily for repetitive pick-and-carry work—harder on the boom sections than on the carrier.
If the crane has Tadano's NCC or similar telematics, request the extension count from the boom lift sequence log. If it's not available, ask the dealer. If they can't or won't provide it, I'd be cautious.
Step 3: Inspect the Bucket Attachment Points (If Applicable)
This step applies if the crane is configured for personnel lifting—a man basket or work bucket. The attachment points on the fly jib or the boom tip need to be inspected for weld cracking, pin wear, and deformation, especially if the bucket was ever set down hard on concrete.
Look for: Witness marks around the attachment pin holes. These indicate the bucket was overloaded or shock-loaded. Even if the bucket itself looks fine, the pin connection points on the boom can suffer hairline cracks.
I checked a 2020 Tadano ATF 80G-4 last summer that had a clean inspection report from the seller. The bucket pins had 0.3mm of oval wear in the attachment lugs—enough to cause a wobble under load. The seller wasn't aware of it. We negotiated a replacement jib tip assembly before purchase.
Step 4: Confirm the Counterweight Configuration
Tadano cranes often have modular counterweight systems. An 80-ton crane might ship with 10 tons of counterweight, but the load chart assumes 12 tons for certain radii. The difference can reduce your lifting capacity by 10-15% at specific extensions.
What to check: The counterweight tray number and thickness. Tadano uses stamped plates or specific weld patterns to identify weight modules. If the crane has aftermarket counterweights, verify they match the load chart specifications.
I've seen cranes sold with 'standard' counterweight that was actually the light configuration. The spec sheet said 'full counterweight' but the truck scale told a different story. We identified it during a test lift at the yard.
Step 5: Compare the Top Loader vs Front Loader Configuration (If Relevant)
This is less about the crane itself and more about how it arrives on site. If you're using a box truck for transport or a top loader for loading the crane onto a trailer, the approach is different from using a front loader or ramp system.
For the crane itself: If you're buying a rough-terrain or all-terrain model, check whether it was originally spec'd for loading via a top loader (lifting from above) or a front loader (driving onto a lowboy). The outrigger base mountings can be affected by repeated lift-from-above loading if the crane wasn't designed for it.
This is a niche point, but if you're moving the crane regularly between sites via box truck or flatbed, confirm the lifting eyes and tie-down points are rated for your transport method. I had a case in 2022 where a crane's lifting eye was bent after repeated use with a top loader that wasn't centered properly.
Step 6: Evaluate the Service Portal Access
One of Tadano's key advantages is the global parts portal and service network. But access isn't automatic when you buy a used crane.
Check: Whether the crane's unit is registered in Tadano's system. If it's not, you may not get technical documentation or parts lookup access. I'd ask the seller to provide a screenshot of the portal dashboard showing the unit registered, or at least a recent parts order receipt under that VIN.
Before purchase, request a printout of the service history from the portal. If the seller pushes back or can't provide one, it's a red flag. Not a dealbreaker, but worth investigating.
Step 7: Verify the Safety Decal Set (Including the Tadano Crane Logo)
This sounds trivial, but hear me out. The safety decal set on a crane is updated over time as regulations change. A missing or faded decal isn't just cosmetic—it's a compliance issue. And the Tadano crane logo placement matters for brand consistency if the machine is being rented out.
Check specifically: The load moment indicator (LMI) decals and the crane's warning placards. They should be legible and reflect the current configuration. If repainted, the decals should be replaced—not painted over. Missing LMI disclaimers can cause operational liability.
In Q3 2024, I rejected a crane because the LMI decal was missing and the seller said 'you can just print one.' That's not acceptable. The decal material and adhesive have to meet ANSI standards for durability.
Also check the Tadano logo: If it's been replaced with an aftermarket decal during repainting, make sure it's correctly aligned and the right size. It won't affect performance, but it affects resale perception. A crooked logo on a rental crane suggests maintenance shortcuts.
Notes and Common Mistakes
Don't Assume a Clean Inspection Report Is Complete
The previous owner's inspection report is useful, but it's not a substitute for your own checks. The inspection is usually done by a third party who may not know the specific quirks of a Tadano 80-ton model. Your pre-purchase checklist should cover the points above even if the report says 'pass.'
Don't Skip the Test Lift for the Biggest Radius
A test lift at full extension is revealing. It shows you how the load chart performs in real conditions. If the crane struggles or the LMI alarms at the expected load, something's off.
My experience is based on about 150 mid-range crane evaluations. If you're working with ultra-heavy crawlers (600-ton class) or extremely old units, some of these steps may need adjustment.
Watch Out for Oversimplified Advice
It's tempting to think you can just compare load chart numbers and pick the higher one. But the load chart is only accurate if the crane's configuration, serial number, and counterweight all match. The 'best load chart' advice ignores the nuances of crane condition and service history.
One Surprise I Didn't Expect
Never expected the cleanest-looking crane to have the most counterweight mismatches. Turns out the repainted units often had aftermarket counterweights that didn't match the spec. The visual condition didn't tell me anything about the weight.
Take this with a grain of salt: I've only worked with domestic vendors in North America. I can't speak to how these principles apply to international sourcing from Asia or the Middle East. But the load chart and serial number matching? That's universal.
